Calis
The holiday retreat of Calis (pronounced Chalish) is renowned for its spectacular sunsets and its laid-back atmosphere. Situated in the south west of the country on the beautiful Mediterranean coast, Calis has a selection of hotels, bars and restaurants that line the extensive beach front road; designated a car-free strip.
General Description
A rather less character full resort than some, with hotels in a straggling row along the sea front, a mainly pedestrianised boulevard with limited traffic access. Back from the sea front, lies a patchwork of stony unpaved tracks and paved and concrete roads with further hotels, apartments and holiday homes interspersed with agricultural plots and sites awaiting development. On the outskirts lies an area of tall grassland and greenery. Overall, the resort has a low-key, laid-back atmosphere.
Market / Suitability
Calis resort is for those seeking a beach location and a compact, easily accessible resort. It is best for families and quiet loving couples; Calis has some nightlife, but plentiful transport to nearby Fethiye town which has a greater selection. It is quite popular with British and German holidaymakers.
Accommodation: An ample number of smaller hotels (most open summer only) and apartments mainly just below middle market category. A few larger, better equipped hotels, but most properties are friendly, family run affairs with the bare essentials, spread along the beach front and off the main roads around the resort.
Beaches
A long, narrow arc of dark sand and shingle lined with sun loungers and shades extends round a broad bay with sheltered waters. Backed by an appealing, mainly pedestrianised boulevard with a grassy verge and small trees; lit for evening strolls. Safe to swim. The Calis beach is long and narrow with a mix of sand and shingle, and as in Dalyan, a population of Loggerhead (Caretta Caretta) turtles gathers here to lay its eggs at certain times of the year.
Shopping
Calis offers a selection of shops with jewellery, clothes, shoes, beachwear and water-sport equipment. Many small well-stocked minimarkets and shops sell souvenirs and local handcrafts; plentiful spices, teas and Turkish delight. A little way from the town is a lovely market that takes place on a Sunday, with the usual selection of very well priced fake designer items, as well as spices, teas and foods. Fethiye has abundant shops and a large covered mart (held on Tuesdays).
Entertainment
Daytime: some water sports offered include the locally famous wind surfing, kite surfing and water-skiing. Besides Turkish baths and massage centres available, there are a number of activities to enjoy, including boat trips to nearby islands, jeep safaris, quad biking, micro lighting, horse riding, and canoeing, diving, fishing and even shark fishing.
Nightlife
More low-key, with a good selection of bars, cafes and cocktail bars, many on the beach front boulevard and with bay views, also a couple of discos. Larger hotels offer seasonal evening entertainments with live music and often belly dancing. More active nightlife can be had in nearby Fethiye town.
Eating Out
Calis offers an ample choice of restaurants, cafes and snack bars serving local and Turkish food, seafood or Italian dishes, Pizza, English breakfasts for the home sick. Restaurants line the beach front boulevard, offering airy dining with fine views of the bay. Nearby Fethiye town offers more variety.
Public Transport
Frequent Dolmus (minibus) to Fethiye town, as well as a water taxi service along the river to Fethiye town, (half-hourly during summer season). Car, bicycle and moped hire all available. Plentiful taxis from a couple of ranks and around resort.
Local Excursions
Boat trips to nearby islands, fishing trips (including shark fishing), Dalyan Turtle beach, Pamukkale (Cotton Castle), Saklikent Gorge, Tlos, various truck safaris in mountains, Fethiye market (Tuesdays), Marmaris, Oludeniz. The best way to enjoy a Calis holiday, however, is to grab a seat at a beach front café with cameras at the ready, and enjoy a cocktail as the sun dips below the horizon. Being a laid-back yet bustling holiday resort, Calis has a view of distant green mountains and fantastic sunsets. Calis is ideal for families and quiet-loving couples looking for a beach location with some nightlife without the noise.
